Casual Teaching Jobs Available

The School of Physics invites expressions of interest from enthusiastic, suitably qualified people to work as
  • Casual Laboratory Demonstrators for first year and higher year teaching laboratories
  • Casual Teaching Assistants for the online courses PHYS1110, PHYS1160, GENS4015, and in the first year study area.
  • Teaching Assistants for first year problem solving workshops
Specific applicant criteria, selection process, and how to apply for different positions are below.
 

Position (1)
Casual Laboratory Demonstrators for First Year Teaching Laboratory and Teaching Assistants for Problem Solving Workshops

Applicants must have:

  • Some practical experience in areas relevant to First Year Physics
  • Completed at least three years of a Science or Engineering degree
  • Preference will be given to applicants currently undertaking an Honours or a PhD in Physics in Session 1, 2017 at UNSW Australia.
Hours:

Up to 10 hours per week from 9:00 am – 7:00 pm Mon - Fri, Weeks 1-13 in Session 1, 2017. First Year Physics Labs start in Week 2 of Session on 6 March 2017.

Selection:
  • If your qualifications are suitable you will be invited to attend an interview and 30 minute test (for new demonstrators only) on 17th or 20th February 2017. The test will cover simple first year physics principles. The textbook for the course is Fundamentals of Physics, Halliday & Resnick.
  • If you are selected you will need to attend Induction & Training Workshop for Laboratory Demonstrators. It will be held on Thursday 23 February 2017, 10:00 am - 2:30 pm in the First Year Physics Teaching Laboratory.
  • Applicants who are successful will be required to attend First Year Physics Laboratory to complete 2 more experiments and to have a short meeting with the First Year Director 12-1 pm on Friday 3 March in the first year physics laboratory.
  • The candidates who have attended the workshop and completed the experiments and the meeting will be compensated with $200.
  • Successful applicants will be informed, and required to complete necessary forms by attending the First Year Physics Office before 3 March 2017.

Position (2)

Casual Laboratory Demonstrators for Higher Year Teaching Laboratories
 
Applicants must have:
  • Some practical experience in areas relevant to Higher Year Physics
  • Science or Engineering degree
  • Preference will be given to applicants currently undertaking an Honours or a PhD in Physics in Session 1, 2017 at UNSW Australia.
Hours:
3-4 hours per week from 9:00 am – 7:00 pm Mon - Fri, Weeks 1-12 in Session 1, 2017.
 

Position (3)

Casual Teaching Assistants for the courses PHYS1110, PHYS1160 and GENS4015

Applicants must have:
  • Knowledge of Physics relevant to PHYS1160, PHYS1110, and GENS4015 courses
  • Science or Engineering degree
  • Preference will be given to applicants currently undertaking an Honours or a PhD in Physics in Session 1, 2017 at UNSW Australia.
Hours:
Up to 48 hours per session for PHYS1110 and PHYS1160 and up to 30 hours per session for GENS4015, in Weeks 1-13 in Session 1, 2017.
 

Position (4)

Casual Teaching Assistants for the First Year Study Area
 
Applicants must have:
  • Knowledge and experience in teaching relevant to First Year Physics
  • Science or Engineering degree
  • Preference will be given to applicants currently undertaking an Honours or a PhD in Physics in Session 1, 2017 at UNSW Australia.
Hours:
2-4 hours per week in Weeks 2-13 in Session 1, 2017. Please note that there are very few of these positions available in comparison to the lab demonstrator positions.
 
Selection:
If your qualifications and experience are suitable for the positions (2), (3) and (4) you will be invited to attend an interview with the relevant academic staff before the start of the Semester.
 
Salaries for all Positions:
Casual hourly rates for lab demonstrators and teaching assistants will apply according to UNSW HR,  (current rate is $48.20/hr; if the casual employee holds a doctoral qualification the rate is $57.07/hr).
